Use your horn(s) Both male and female giraffes have two distinct, hair-covered horns called ossicones. Male giraffes use they horns to playfully fight with one another. This they use to wrap around leaves and pull them off trees. Their fur has a light yellowish tan or off-white colour with brown or russet patches. No two giraffes have the same pattern. The different sub-species have different coat patterns. Both male and female giraffes have small horn-like stumps on their head, which are covered with skin.
Why do giraffes have horns? The giraffe has an extinct relative called the Sivatherium. This animal had two sets of ossicones, as they are really called. Impressive sets of horn-like antlers that the giraffe inherited.
