HIV prevalence in Tanzania is characterized by significant heterogeneity across age, gender, socioeconomic status, and geographic location, implying differentials in the risk of transmission. HIV prevalence is higher in sub-groups such as in people who inject drugs (PWID) (16-51%), men who have sex with men (MSM) (22-42%) and mobile populations and sex workers (14-35%). Among adults 15 years and older, HIV prevalence varies geographically across Tanzania, ranging from 11.4% in Njombe and 11.3% in Iringa to less than one% (<1%) in Lindi and Zanzibar. HIV prevalence peaks at 12% among females aged 45 to 49, as compared to a peak of 8.4% among males aged 40 to 44.
